I would say that the vast, vast majority of US-born black Americans have a southern sounding accent. Rich, poor, north, south, educated or not I can hear the southern roots in their speech. Sometimes it's strong. Sometimes it's subtle. It's almost always there.

I can see how African American can be a problem, too, as most black people in this country are several generations removed from Africa.
Yeah. I don't like using the word Black either. No country called Black as far as I'm concerned and you're right, none of us are actually the color we say we are. I use it more than AA, though.

As a black west coaster, I have no affiliation with the South.

This is true most of the time. Even in famous hollywood black actors, they have that accent about them. But it's not always the case...look at our president. If you had never heard his voice before or seen his face, and one day you heard him doing a speech on the television from the other room, would you think, "That's a black guy!"?

Well he would be an obvious exception since he's not a descendant of African slaves; his father's family is from Kenya and not America.

I don't have any sort of southern accent and do not consider myself southern in any way, shape or form.

Not southern in any way, shape, or form, huh?

Tell me, which side of Chicago do you live?

I hope my earlier post on the first page didn't offend you because I do understand that not every Black Chicagoan has a southern drawl in their speech but from my personal experience almost all the Black Chicagoans I've came across had some kind of southern drawl in the speech. In my opinion it seems like the southern drawl was the strongest in the South Side of Chicago. This is just my perspective as an African American who grew up in Philadelphia.

My brother-in-law's family has been in NJ for at least 150 years, probably longer. They don't have any southern background to them that we can find. My sister, who does all the genealogy stuff in the family and has started in on the in-laws has traced parts of his family farther back to Orange County, New York.

However, my brother-in-law's ex-wife does all the cooking for the big barbecue that my sister and her husband throw every year (we're a very "extended family"--my BIL had two sons with his first wife, and they were divorced before my sister and BIL met and married and had their daughter, so there were good relationships because of the kids, now grown) and the food is definitely traditional "soul food", so she probably has the southern roots. And the white side of the family just loves eating it.
