I'd also suggest the Clear Lake/Bay Area of Houston -- the Houston metro will have more/better job opportunities, access to great big-city amenities like world-class museums and a Theater District, combined with a moderate to low cost of living compared to many of the other places named so far.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have to admit that the thread of people from CA talking about their move to Houston scared me off a bit, but I'll keep reading.

Warm, safe, on the ocean, and cheap. Not on the West coast. You might be able to find something in one of the gulf states.
