The forum is city vs city but my question is about region vs region, rural areas.
I'd like to know if anyone has personal experience allowing (unbiased!) comparison of any these regions in terms of people's friendliness, being more welcoming, being least snobby, less insular ("you're not from here"), acceptance (or at least neutrality, without hostility) towards newcomers -- especially towards immigrants (I'm from Northern Europe and moved here over 20 years ago but do have strong accent).
Not looking for opinion of the type "my home state is surely better" but rather from someone who's neutral, "has no dog in the fight" (or real estate promoting interests, especially) and can compare either of:
Northern or Central Maine
Michigan UP
Northcentral Arkansas
Northern Idaho
I've read some concerning accounts on various resources (including here on city-data) about some of the above areas, but such things/experiences have real meaning only in comparison to other places. Any other comments comparing local cultures would be interesting to hear too.
