Anyway, many people don't think southern California as southwest, but in all geographical terms it is. Some even include all the state of Texas, but I have a hard time saying Houston or Dallas is in the SW. For sure, El Paso is and maybe even Amarillo. Even extreme SW Utah could be part of it.

Right on, WildWestDude! The southwest has many different meanings-- it's actually several different overlapping regions. Some view the southwest as a romantic place of cowboys and Indians, riding horses in the sunset. I subscribe to a more realistic view of what the southwest is really about-- an urban region consisting of large sprawling cities in the middle of the desert-- Phoenix and Las Vegas are prime examples. And yes, in many ways, Los Angeles and San Diego are part of the southwest too-- in fact, as southwestern as it gets. Phoenix is modeled on LA in every way imaginable. I wouldn't even say it's a "mini-LA" as other have said-- there's really nothing "mini" about Phoenix. Rather, it's an alternative LA.
Even though my name is Vegaspilgrim and Las Vegas used to be my favorite city, I will now vote San Diego as my favorite city in the region. San Diego blows the other cities away in pretty much every department, other than gambling and flashy entertainment.
Albuquerque is my favorite Southwestern city. Pretty strange and unique city but it has some fascinating history and plenty of characters. I remember when I lived there, I would step out of my house and feel like I was in another country. Very distinct culture and very overlooked
