Maybe a little further north in Ohio than where I had so that I could've had a little more snow and it would've been a little bit more cloudy. As somebody who freckles, Ohio and Western PA have the optimal amount of cloud cover to freckle but not burn often.
I grew up in Columbia, SC and would not change it for the world. My experiences there made me who I am today and I am quiet happy with where I grew up.
Well I kind of grew up in 3 places. My early childhood (up to age 9) was spent in Oregon, spent my tween years in Texas (9-12), and here in Orange County for the past 8 years. If I could have spent my whole 18 years growing up in one place however, I would choose Oregon, it truly feels like home more than any place else on earth.
Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to grow up in Europe, Japan, or Australia, but I had a good childhood here in the good ol' USA.
I was a military brat so I grew up (for the most part) in Japan, Virginia, NC, and Georgia. "Home" (where the "home folks" lived) was southern Arkansas and Louisiana (New Orleans and Shreveport), so though I didn't live in New Orleans long, or in Arkansas at all, I generally associated the idea of "home" with those places since we visited our relatives for extended periods of time and often.
I wouldn't change a THING about my preteen years - I absolutely LOVE the midatlantic states and especially the coastlines of Virginia and North Carolina -oh, and the mountains as well. We lived at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay and I lived there again as an adult. Virginia is my very favorite state (followed closely by Texas!).
I would have preferred to spend my teen years in tidewater area of Virginia, or in North Carolina as well. Georgia has a lot of positives and I made good friends there, but my mentality and interests, even down to my food preferences and decorating styles, are more a fit for coastal Virginia than Georgia.
I lived in Japan for three years and that was amazing. That would have also been a great place to be a teen. The technology, the pace of life, the unique culture, the food, and the wonderful people would have been fun to continue to explore.
I also lived in Germany for three years as an adult. I think that would be an interesting place to be as a teen - especially if you're interested in history or exploring a variety of European cultures. Germany is centrally located in Europe so it's easy to get to a lot of different countries for weekend trips.
Regardless of all that, I have no regrets. I like who I am today and all those places I lived help shape my personality. I've lived in Texas for 25 years now, and raised my kids here, and they all LOVE Texas and seem appreciative of being raised here.
I'm happy about where I grew up. Mostly in a small Wisconsin town where everybody knew everybody. But my dad was from the south (Missouri) so I got a few weeks every summer of playing with kids down there, and I went to college at 17 in Louisiana, so I had enough social exposure to being a boy in both the South and the North, which I think was pretty valuable to me.
