I placed "gayest" in quotation marks because the poll relies on people's willingness to self-identify as gay; particularly on this issue, polling is a highly inexact science.

Still, the results are interesting.

LGBT Percentage Highest in D.C., Lowest in North Dakota

The poll question, "Do you personally identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender" was answered Yes by the following percentages (top 10 jurisdictions):

District of Columbia, 10%
Hawaii, 5.1%
Vermont, 4.9%
Oregon, 4.9%
Maine, 4.8%
Rhode Island, 4.5%
Massachusetts, 4.4%
South Dakota, 4.4%
Nevada, 4.2%
California, 4.0%

Personally, I'm surprised that South Dakota and Nevada both scored ahead of California.

Yawn. All that is is a list of states showing how comfortable people feel answering the question. The total number shows that in DC, only 2% declined to say either yes or no, and in Louisiana, it was 6.4% who said neither yes nor no. Within that range is enough to skew the difference between the yes answers in both states.

It is not about how many people are gay, but about how many self-identify as such
