I am nowhere near 60+ years old, didn't watch the show religiously at all (don't know that I've ever even seen a full episode)....and know that it is not based in Raleigh but rather in Mayberry which is based off the real town of Mt Airy in the western part of the state. Raleigh was often mentioned as "the big city" in the show from what I understand. The odd thing about that is the fact that back then, I'm pretty sure Raleigh was still smaller than Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Durham....all three of which are closer to "Mayberry" than Raleigh is.

The Triad is definitely overshadowed by Charlotte and The Triangle within NC though.

I think a lot of government business was conducted in Raleigh (and they were officers of the law), hence the frequent mention of it. I think the one they talked about most was Mount Pilot, which is actually Pilot Mountain...a very small town near Mt. Airy.

Richmond, VA is one. It's completely overshadowed by NoVA and the Virginia Beach-Norfolk area. Nobody ever talks about Richmond, but its a fairly decent sized city and from what I understand has a pretty dense core for the South.

Wow, largest city in KY and you never heard about it I think most people relate Louisville to Kentucky as the capital of Kentucky, at least thats why I thought a few years ago

Yes, most people (students especially) who are not well-versed in maps or state capitals will place Louisville as the capital of KY rather than Frankfort.
