Seems like pretty much college towns have the best transit systems for smaller cities/metro's

Thank you all very much for your comments. So far we've had only Chapel Hill and Boone from the South. Are there any more nice smaller cities in the region with a good sized walkable downtown and good public transit? I'm thinking there must be a good deal of college towns that fit? Athens, GA maybe? I know Charleston's UA is a little over my maximum, but would it fit that sort of description maybe?

This author thought poorly of Athens, though he can be nitpicky:

This author sounds like an idiot comparing Athens to MANHATTAN of all places. This guy sounded pretty narrow minded and like he lives in a bubble.

Yup there is! I'm actually kind of surprised nobody mentioned Bloomington, IN! It has a beautiful downtown, very walkable! And I think the bus system in the city has been awarded one of or the best in the nation.

Thanks very much for the recommendation, but I don't know anyone who would place Indiana in the South. No matter, all suggestions are great.
