Some articles to read through.
Indianapolis, Ind. - America's Best Downtowns - Forbes
Great Urban Weekend Escapes: Indianapolis - Forbes

Also you hear about Indianapolis more than you think. especially in sports and the colts.
Super Bowl 46 was a smashing success and was held in Indianapolis. I still have it recorded on my DVR and they showed plenty of skyline coverage and even talked about how great Indy was during the Super Bowl.
Theres a good reason Indy is called a hiddem gem of America.

Well I'm not much of a sports person so that could explain that.

I've been looking at it all morning, I'm liking what I see and hear a LOT so far. Cheap housing doesn't hurt either, it's the cheapest on my list. This will almost definitely be one of the top 3 contenders.

I'm very glad you posted this; otherwise I might have completely overlooked it.

Keep Austin off your list if you don't like hipsters. You will encounter some hipsters in any large city but in Austin they will be a prevalent part of the culture. You may have the same problem in Minneapolis.

Otherwise it looks like a good list.

Yeah that was the one thing that had me on edge about Austin. I think I could do much worse, but I could do better as well.

Wasn't aware that Minneapolis was infected too, but I was probably going to scratch that one off anyway given that I do not wish to be turned into a popsicle.

One addition - Good walkability would be nice.

Downtown Indianapolis is very walkable. its one of the most walkable downtowns in the nation. everything is right there within walking distance and the Indianapolis cultural trail links it all.

Well I think I will have to sacrifice there as the extremely walkable cities are cities like NY, Chicago, etc. which I'm not interested in.

Indianapolis seems to be right on par with most on my list.

There is also the Monon trail that links Downtown with the Northern Suburbs of Indy.
Mayor Ballard has done a wonderful job adding bike lanes/trails and making Indy much more walkable in the past 5 years.

I'm currently living in the northeast, have never been anywhere else, and I hate it. I hate the people. They are arrogant, shallow, unfriendly, and neurotic. That's my primary issue.

Basically what I'm trying to do here is find the opposite of all that. I'm just going to throw out some random thoughts here.

- Mild weather.
- Laid back, conservative (not as in politically conservative, more in a general sense, although politically conservative is fine). Again, let me emphasize laid back. This is very important to me.
- Lack of urbanite hipster douche bags.
- Urban or semi urban. I am not the country type.
- Friendly people. Very important.
- I'm not religious, but I don't mind sane religious people at all, as long as they don't mind me.
- Nice women. I like those.
- I am not the party/club type. Couldn't care less. I am social however.
- Relatively low crime. Obviously.

I've already disqualified most of: the northeast (neurotic nutjobs), the western coastal areas (hipster douche bags), and the west (too rural).

Help me out here. Thanks!

Was on my list too.

Looks like I was on the right track with my selections.
