I feel the same way. Charlotte is a nice, middle-of-the-road place to live in my opinion. It's no Portland, Seattle, or Boston, but its at least halfway decent, especially with Southend, Dilworth, and NoDA. There are much worse places.

Living in a city that is truly boring and is a true cultural wasteland, I really do envy people who have managed to make it in the 'hip 5.'

These cities are not the hip 5 though. And up to this point I have never met anyone who would consider them the hip five.

Well I've lived in Minneapolis and plan on moving back soon. Seeing as Mpls has more amenities than Portland and Austin and all of the cities listed above with the expection of Austin are much more expensive to live in, I would say no.

Portland, Seattle, and Austin are always included in the 'Hip 5' but some lists include Minneapolis and Denver rather than San Francisco and Boston.

Minneapolis and Denver are definitely rising stars and are on track to become the great cities of the next decade and take their rightful place with the Hip 5 mentioned in my OP. I envy people who live in Minneapolis and Denver as well.

Used to live in San Francisco and got pushed out by high costs. Would move back there in a minute if I could.

Sadly all of those are high cost cities except for Austin and Portland

Before I moved, I never really envied people who lived in SF, but I was definitely consumed by the idea of living here. Now, I envy those who have spent their lives here. I missed a lot and am making up for lost time.
