By sterile, I mean that it lacked a coziness. It was physically near perfect, but it lacked a certain charm.
Ah, good point. The city kind of puts on the tourist/colonial era front. It almost reminds me of my moms house where you're afraid to touch anything as if it were there only for looks and no function....if that makes any sense to you. I do know what you are saying though.
Port Townsend, WA. Very pretty. Lovely Victorians. Waterfront. Cafes, bookstores, art galleries.
Port townsend is beautiful- but it's around 12,000 people- not 40-100K. (Not to nitpick ). Bellingham, WA is pretty (but not as much as PT) and more populated.
A lot of Detroit's suburbs (Livonia, Lincoln Park, Dearborn) are very nice. Honestly, I've never seen such a difference in a city and it's suburbs as wide as a difference Detroit and it's surrounding areas have. You can be in Detroit and be flabbergasted by its filth, and then ten minutes later, you can be in a very nice suburb.
