My top 5 states
Hawaii
My all time favorite and seriously most beautiful state I've ever been to. I love mountains and ocean and the striking juxtaposition of both on the islands are incredible. The snorkeling, lush tropical landscape, volcanic black rocks, blue/green water and waves, and the laid back Aloha spirit are captivating. Hawaii has a soul stirring kind of beauty. My favorite town is Kailua-Kona. I can't wait to get there again.
Arizona
I have a hobby with scenic photography and this is my favorite state to photograph. The colors of this state and unusual terrain look totally surreal in certain spots. Hiking the Grand Canyon and red rocks of Sedona is unforgettable. A lot of regions in the U have very continuous similar terrain and scenery for very long distances. However driving through Arizona the scenery constantly changes from low desert valleys, saguaro cactus covered hills, piñon pine covered high desert, high alpine peaks and ponderosa pines, to the red rocks of the Colorado Plateau. Arizona is my favorite road trip state. My favorite city is Tucson.
Colorado
Colorado is my favorite mountain state. Seeing the Rockies in the SW part of the state in the fall with golden aspens and bald granite covered peaks are stunning. One of the best things I've ever done was hiking a 14'er (14,000 foot + peak), it was exhilarating to be up at that summit. I dig Denver, it's one of those places I end up making new friends each time I visit. My favorite city/town is Durango, very cool historic Victorian mining town with a cool atmosphere and close to some of the awesome mountain scenery this country has to offer.
Vermont
I really dig Vermont, it just feels peaceful and I swear there isn't a single ugly town there that I know of. Most of the state has really quaint small towns with lush green rolling mountains and awesome fall color and decent skiing for the East. Vermont also has some excellent lakes to swim in during the summer. Lake Champlain and Lake Willoughby with the sandy beaches and rolling hillside slopes are very scenic. My favorite city is Burlington pretty much because it has a very active and vibrant downtown with a gorgeous setting on the lake, and really pretty sunsets.
Rhode Island
My favorite ocean beaches are in New England are in Rhode Island, the water temps in the summer are nice (too cold in Maine/NH/Mass), Block Island is very charming and relaxing with really pretty sandy shores and lighthouses. I enjoy dining in the Little Italy part of Providence, the architecture is very cool especially in Newport which is my favorite city in the state with the gilded age mansions and classic colonial New England seaport ambiance.

So far, I would say Arizona, Texas, Colorado, and Maine are the best places for holiday.
I would really like to go to Alaska, that seems like it would be an amazing adventure.

It's one of those places that changes your perspective on things. Seeing that many natural superlatives and wilderness on an Alaskan scale is mind blowing.
I like the Western U.S., mainly because it is so different from where I live.
Utah (National Parks), New Mexico (food and culture), Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana (mountain scenery), California (diversity of landscapes), and Washington and Oregon (cities, mountain and coastal scenery).
I voted for Utah because it contains 3 of my favorite National Parks (Arches, Zion, Canyonlands).
I voted for North Carolina. It's tough to beat the NC Mountains for getaways and their accessibility to most of the east coast, and the Outer Banks beaches are among the best in the world.
Finger Lakes, NY. Outer Banks, NC. (Tacky Alert) The Shore/Atlantic City, NJ - it's just so accessible, why not?!
