Agree, my dad had a place in Cashiers. Not exactly a boomtown, but a great place to get away from it all, and some absolutely gorgeous scenery.

I also agree, it's my runner-up to the Boone-Blowing Rock-Banner Elk area. It sits at a similarly high elevation (3000+ feet) so it's quite nice in the summer.

I was thinking about finding a town similar to Gatlinburg and Helen, Ga. The problem is that you will have to deal with tourists to live in a mountain town otherwise there is no economy.

Here is a list from the NC forum on here:

Small Asheville Area Towns

Biltmore Forest
Black Mountain
Montreat
Weaverville
Woodfin
Balfour
Barker Heights
Bat Cave
East Flat Rock
Etowah
Flat Rock
Fletcher
Hendersonville
Laurel Park
Mills River
Mountain Home
Saluda
Valley Hill
Canton
Clyde
Lake Junaluska
Maggie Valley
Waynesville
West Canton
Hot Springs
Mars Hill
Marshall
