As has been stated, it all depends on the map projection. Different projections show different areas. Simply, some are accurate at the equator, some the opposite, etc -- that's why Russia and Greenland often look much larger than they really are.

The earth is a sphere and distortions occur in the various types of projections.

I see what the OP means, though. If you take a sheet of paper and place it horizontally across your screen at the northermost tip of Maine it looks like Maine extends north of Winnipeg.

Just follow the latitudinal lines, as the earth is not flat..
