There would be a lot of options in New Jersey. Most of Hudson County is effectively one urbanized area, and should be a mega "Jersey City."
That's how Jersey City came to be in the first place. Van Vorst Township, Greenville Twp, Hudson City, and Bergen City merged into a mega "Jersey City" in the mid 1800s. The idea was more towns would join, but I think they started getting cold feet.
That's stretching the definition of "adjacent" a bit. Not only are the two city centers 121 miles apart, but there is a large "buffer zone" (consisting mostly of Camp Pendleton) between them. And good luck getting the citizens of Orange County to agree a merger.
It would make far more sense for LA to absorb all of the ridiculous little citylets in the vast nowhere that is east LA County. Starting with Bell, and going on to Cudahy, Hawaiian Gardens, Bell Gardens, Bellflower, Industry, Commerce, Paramount, Pico Rivera, etc. etc. etc.
I don't know if most of the people suggesting a Boston-Cambridge merger are from around here, but I just don't see why they should or would. To clarify for outsiders, yes I tell them Cambridge is just part of the city, it's contiguous in that sense, but there are clear borders of identity that make it seem sort of silly to merge these two. Even enormous cities like Los Angeles, that incorporate areas of dramatic difference, have parts like Beverly Hills and West Hollywood that are separate from the municipality largely because of identity/financial issues. Brookline is a similar case though I could see that working maybe possibly. If a merger were to happen the one that makes the most sense would be to merge Suffolk County, so Chelsea, Everett, Revere, and Winthrop, in Boston. At the least, Chelsea and Everett. But even that I don't think is necessary or needs to be a priority right now.
St. Paul should adopt a consolidated city-county with Ramsey County, like Indianapolis. Golden Valley and St. Louis Park should be annexed by Minneapolis. Brooklyn Park, Brooklyn Center, Robbinsdale, New Hope, and Crystal should consolidate. Fridley, Spring Lake Park, Columbia Heights, and Hilltop should consolidate and join Hennepin County.

For New England cities......
Providence, Pawtucket, Cranston, East Providence, North Providence, and Warwick - they are all mostly urban adjacent cities and would put Providence with a city population at about 450,000 within about 100 square miles.
a Hartford and West Hartford merger would never work out, so forget that.
Portland and South Portland, Maine. SP is essentially just more Portland with malls and an airport.
Burlington, South Burlington, and Winooski, VT. It's all Burlington.
I can easily see Cambridge and Somerville fitting right into Boston, and throw Chelsea in for good measure. I wouldn't go beyond that. Brookline merging into Boston would never happen. The urban fabric spills over into Winthrop, Revere, Quincy, Everett, Medford, and Malden. This would put Boston's city population at well over a million.
