When you mention Dunkin' Donuts to a West Coaster, chances are you'll either receive a blank stare, a facial contortion implying disgust, or a lighthearted comment about how it's got nothing on Starbucks.

Whereas most East Coasters have somewhat of a choice between DD and Starbucks, DD is just not part of the West Coast schema because it's virtually non-existent on the West Coast.

Although there are a growing number of DD stores in the Phoenix area, most transplanted West Coasters with whom I interact aren't familiar with the brand at all and are staunchly loyal to Starbucks to boot, so many have never even been to a DD. Kinda similar to how most transplanted East and West Coasters have never heard of Culver's, a Midwestern fast-food restaurant with a presence in Arizona, so it probably isn't their go-to fast-food restaurant due to unfamiliarity with the brand/products.
