My husband and I want to move our girls to the South. I have done some traveling and fell in love with the southern border states. We are open to any southern state accept Florida, New Mexico or Arizona. I don't exactly like Texas, when I went through it before it was to dull for me.

My husbands job allows us to move anywhere, so employment is not an issue. I have young children so we want to move where there is as follows:
good schools
low crime rate
nice weather (moving from Oregon coast)
low risk for natural disasters
not extremely religious
We like to go mudding, hunting, horse back riding and hiking a lot. Any imput you have on any of the states I listed would be amazing!

Do you have an ideal city size in terms of population? Assuming not, I would look at eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina, specifically anything near the Great Smokey Mountains. If you do prefer larger cities you may like the outlying northern
suburbs of Atlanta, and outlying western suburbs of Charlotte.

I agree with the above since you already have work options handled. Asheville would be my pick specifically as it hits all of your criteria with excellent public schools (in-town), low crime, a nice four season climate with milder winters, low risk for natural disasters and is not overly religious. Easy access to the mountains and all kinds of outdoor activities fulfills your recreational criteria too. Asheville isn't a big city but it offers the amenities of a city many times it's size.

If you want to be on the southern border of the USA and don't want Florida, New Mexico. Arizona, or Texas, then the only options you have left are California, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. That narrows down you choices a lot.

Myself, I include Hawaii as a state on the southern border of the USA, so you might possibly consider Hawaii as an option.
