The reason southeast Florida is full of Yankee culture is because it was built by a railroad magnate named Henry Flagler (and one of the founders of Standard Oil) who is from Hyde Park, New York. He built & extended his Florida East Coast railroad from Jacksonville all the way down to the Keys and establishing cities like W. Palm Beach/Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale & Miami with resorts along the way down to his Overseas Railroad to Key West.

There is a very strong bond between the Yankees and southeast Florida. Miami's main street is named Flagler street in his honor and the tourists that came to Palm Beach & Miami were catered to wealthy Northerners who established roots early on.

The "Southerners" came mostly after WW2 after many soldiers of "Southern" descent returned to Miami & SE Florida after being stationed there for training.

Go to a Dolphins/NY Jets game and you will see half the fans are Jets fan! Their is a kinship between the northeastern US & SE Florida that goes back well over a century.

We are not "Southerners"!

Exactly. I'm tired of haters trying to drag Florida down. It's not the South!

Miami is one of my favorite cities. If I was hating on it, I'd do everything in my power to claim it wasn't part of this incredible region that I call home. Except it is and I gladly embrace it. You can argue it until you're blue in the face, but it doesn't sway me at all.

^ so influential was Henry Flagler to our state they even have a county named for him in the northern part of the state as well!
From Wikipedia :

Flagler County is a county on the east coast of the U.S. state of Florida. Created in 1917 from portions of Saint Johns and Volusia counties, it was named for Henry Morrison Flagler, who built the Florida East Coast Railway. Bunnell is the county seat of Flagler County.

One can also see the beautiful hotels he built in St. Augustine as well.

PS: Go try to find a "Confederate" memorial or statue in most of the state of Florida. It's mostly in the panhandle region or the northern parts of the state.

Your home is dripping with bigotry and oppression. Florida, on the other hand, has had strong Quaker influences.

Bajan, since you're so enthused about everything involving the urban lifestyle, can you tell me with a straight face that Trick Daddy, Trina, Plies, and Rick Ross aren't southern rappers?

Pitbull is not a southern rapper. Besides, the white population in Miami is NOT southern. And that's what truly matters.

They all represent the South too.

Really?

Now - it may be too full of rude people, or too full of crass commercialism, or too full of Yankee culture (but I repeat myself) to be "the South" - but it's definitely what I would call educated.

It's nothing like New York. Just because a bunch of a New Yorkers moved to Miami does not change the history nor the dynamics of the area. By this logic, Houston and Dallas are in borrowed time with the amount of Midwesteners and West coast people moving there.
