Virginia is most certainly a southern state, and southern when you speak in terms of culture. It makes no sense that because DC suburbs have spilled into northern VA that VA is somehow not southern. When you have I guess 95 counties and lets say a handful of those counties that border MD or DC that that makes VA not southern does not make sense. It is kind of like saying that the Bahamas or Mexico are paradise when all you do is visit the resort.

I have traveled thru VA and it is the South.

It just goes to show those that visit or live in VA in the NOVA area and who stay in that area is all they know about VA.

I recently saw a list of state obesity rankings. The South dominates the list with 12 of the top 15 including #1 Mississippi.

There is one Southern state that is actually one of the least 10 obese states...Florida.

This is just one of thousands of measures you could look at. But when it comes to obesity Florida is very much the least Southern state.

For my part, having visited Maryland several times and Delaware once, as an Okie (who lives back in Oklahoma after living over a decade in Texas) I can say with assurance that the Southern tendencies (accents, religious affiliation, food norms, customs and overall feel of the culture) of OK/TX are exponentially greater than Maryland and/or Delaware and Virginia and Florida in the main.
Oh, I forgot about Virginia and Florida.

Anyways, I think the least Southern "Southern states" are Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia.

Texas and Oklahoma have a "frontier western" essence in their culture, while Maryland, Delaware, and NOVA are practically extensions of the Northeast. Florida, in addition to a large northeastern -style population in the southern part of the state, also has a large Carribean island flair.

I would say Florida.

I'd say Florida since it was barely even populated prior to the mid-20th century (only 500,000 people in 1920!!!), and many/most of the people who settled there were not from Dixie.

However I'd say the rural and smaller cities from Orlando northwards are pretty Southern.

MD. Just look at how much argument there is on CD about how it should no longer count as southern despite its history.

Florida definitely. It doesn't strike me as culturally southern like say South carolina, or Mississippi.

IMO, FL seems even less Southern than MD and DE.
