historically, the south was liberal and owned by Democrat party.
more southern should mean more liberal, if the expression southern must have a political meaning.
Democrats used to be conservative, don't you know anything? Republicans used to be liberal. Sometime in the 20th century that changed. The South has always been conservative and always will be.
nobody who voted for FDR and LBJ and liberal Democrat politicians can be called a conservative. Most of the south voted for those liberal Democrat politicians back in the racist days.
dixiecrats were democrats. hence the -crat suffix.
all you got to do is google to see Democrats owned the south up until Nixon, and Democrat/Dixiecrat Alabama govenor George Wallace won some of the southern states that year.
FDR and LBJ were as liberal as a politician can be, as liberal as Obama. The south voted for both of them big time. SC, for example, voted for FDR 96% one year. Thus, liberalism and racism are not mutually exclusive.
you never hear Democrats talk about FDR and LBJ and other Democrat politician's 'southern strategy' when they were winning the south during the racist era.
they try to say Nixon was a racist. even though he supported and enforced school integration as president.
if GOP has this racist southern strategy, Nixon would not have been our guy.
Thus, liberalism and racism are not mutually exclusive.
Of course. You'd be a fool to think otherwise

The main reason southerners voted for these candidates was because both were big on welfare programs. At the time, the south was more or less a third-world country

While you are indeed right that Nixon often supported pro-civil rights legislation (He even appointed the first Hispanic Treasurer of the United States, Romana Bañuelos), you can find recordings of Nixon saying some not-so-nice things about minorities. To be fair, the man was a product of the time he grew up in.
I think we should make this private if you want to continue debate. After all, the title of the thread is
'Which Southern State is the Least Southern?', not 'History of US political parties'
I'm pointing out that 'less southern' in an accurate historical sense should mean more conservative, not more liberal.
the topic should have been entitled, which southern states are most liberal. why use the word southern in a political way.
What Nixon said in private has little bearing on people's lives if he supported civil rights. that doesn't compare to george wallace and the southern democrats.
you are the one who wanted to debate this, and you didn't get some things right. You didn't appear to know Democrats had controlled the south.

well actually the premise of the topic is to associate 'southern' with conservative / Republican and obiously 'southern'' is used as pejorative on this website.

LBJ was a huge racist. And Nixon was nowhere close to being like George Wallace a Democrat.

THe South was NEVER liberal. It never has been. First you try to argue that there's no Deep South and try to deny South Carolina is part of it. Next you try to deny the South is the least impoverished region in the country when poverty rates prove otherwise...now what are you going to argue? That the South was more humane to blacks in pre-Civil War times than the North was? LBJ a racist LOL what's next?
