Sometimes a specific car (usually the end ones) might be less crowded

If you find a city with great public transit which isn't crowded, chances are pretty high the public transit system is losing money hand over fist.

Fair enough, but TriMet can't possibly be worse than what passes for transportation here in SF.

Some stats from a recent Muni "performance" report (covering May 2012 - April 2013):

-- Muni's on-time performance is just 58.7 percent, way below the voter-mandated goal of 85 percent. (For Portland buses and light rail, it hovers around 80%.)
-- On an average day, 181 vehicles need to be held out for maintenance.
-- A sufficient number of light-rail vehicles are available to operate full scheduled Muni Metro service on just 33.1 percent of weekdays.
-- Muni suffers 216 delays of more than 10 minutes per month on transit lines, meaning approximately 2,500 delays a year.
-- The cost of those delays during peak hours in April was about $4.2 million, meaning $50 million when extrapolated to a full year.

Meanwhile, our brain-dead Board of Supervisors (county council; SF is its own county) has decided that the best way to deal with these challenges is to offer free bus rides to low-income youth.

Cleveland has a good system that is oft overlooked and not uber-congested.
