Minnesota! I've lived here the last 30 years (of my 62 years) and I'm staying.
I've lived in many places, but I love Minnesota the most even if it is minus 14F right now.

Leaving aside momentary romances with different places, here's what I think I'd need to be happy after the novelty wears off:

- A decent-sized city (metro at least 2 million, or bare minimum 1 mil)
- Not so face-meltingly hot in the summers that it's unsafe to stay outside long periods or bike vigorously (which nixes some of the Southern and Southwestern states)
- A good number of educated people
- Not a state I've lived in (IL, OH, VA, NV), and ideally, as different of a "feel" from those as possible

That would suggest the following as good candidates: CO, WA, OR, CA, NY, NJ, MA, CT, maybe also PA, MN, NC

There are so many great states, and every state has it's positives. Also, I've lived in Texas for nearly 30 years and I love it here. HOWEVER, if I could just choose any state and not be concerned about cost of living, family, etc. I'd choose Virginia. I have lived there in the past and I love it. It has everything - history, mountains, rolling hills, the ocean, the Chesapeake Bay, etc. It has four seasons styled exactly the way I like them. It has friendly people and great food. Maybe I'll live there again one day, who knows? Meanwhile, it's a great place to visit.

I'm one of those people who takes a road trip and just about every other town I say to myself, "Boy, I'd like to live 'here' or wouldn't it be nice to live 'there'." So I just may by an inexpensive, small home in some state with low property taxes, get a small RV or van, and spend most of my time on the road.

Same, I'd love to live in most places just temporary for 6 months at a time. I can't see a better state than California at all for more than 6 months.

New Mexico - Land of Enchantment...lives up to its name. I wanted to move there the first time I saw it at age ten but my parents had other plans. It took me a while but I made it.

Argh! Hardest question of them all. I had enough trouble limiting myself to 5 in the poll.
The things I know for certain are that I don't want to pick a territory, a state that isn't in the contiguous 48, or a state that I've lived in. So no Hawaii, Alaska, Arkansas, or Missouri. Nothing wrong with them, just not what I'm looking for.
Ideally I'd also avoid places that get extremely hot (over 100) in the summer, but Texas gets an exception to this rule, because I have family ties there and they have my favorite food in the country.
I'm considering the idea of living part-time in one place and part-time in another, but I have no idea how that even works so for now it's just an idea.
