In my opinion the statistics for MSA covers too much area. Urbanized area statistics seem to present a better representation of a actual city size. We all know that every major city outgrows its municipal boundaries. Any thoughts

The actual city does - anything more than 2000 sq miles from the core is sprawl
Top 10 Most Populated Metropolitan cities in America 2013 MSA
1. New York City Metropolitan Area MSA - 19,122,331
2. Los Angeles Metropolitan Area MSA – 13,040,952
3. Chicago Metropolitan Area MSA – 9,556,129
4. Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area MSA – 6,714,077
5. Houston Metropolitan Area MSA – 6,270,003
6. Philadelphia Metropolitan Area MSA - 6,027,226
7. Washington Metropolitan Area MSA – 5,837,363

Some MSA's cover entirely too much area. For example Atlanta covers over 30 counties, including some parts of Alabama. But when it comes to urbanized area it doesn't rank in the top 10. I agree with Cold as Ice...anything more than 2000 sq miles is just spwal
Urbanized Area, but it isn't perfect either. L.A.'s true size is closer to 15 million. MSA and UA undersell its size, CSA oversells it.
The Bay Area ring, which is really one urban area, is around 5 million people. No measurement (UA, MSA, CSA) is 100% accurate for that city, to point where it doesn't crack the top 10 among largest MSAs, which is silly.
Looking at the numbers, DC and Dallas receive the largest bump from UA to MSA. Miami gets almost no bump.

In the statistics you mentioned above, Atlanta comes in number 9 in both UA and MSA. And we have mentioned time and time again that Georgia counties are small. Georgia has the most counties of any state outside of Texas. The Core counties of Atlanta are Fulton, Gwinnett, Clayton and Cobb. That is where the majority of residents in the metro area live, FYI.

In Philadelphia's case I would say neither metric represents the true size of the city. Although for most cities, the urban area metric works well. Especially for cities like Miami as it's MSA and urban area are basically the same thing.
