I'm a Registered Nurse with 21 years of experience. I live in the Panhandle
of Florida where I can only make about $27 per hour. We live in a trailer
on a dirt road paying $1000 a month mortgage payment. Our credit cards
are about maxed out, we are 50 years of age, no ties to the area, and
need to get out of Dodge!! It is very expensive to eat out here or really
do anything..

So, we want to move in the next 2 months. We are looking at the following
areas. All are either offering me free housing, or a large sign on bonus to
sign up for a perm job.

Roswell, New Mexico - $30/hr $15K bonus. Housing cheap

Ft Myers, Florida $30/hr $25K bonus 1 year contract. Iffy housing area.
crime, rude people, but love the climate and area.

Charlotte, NC - $29/hr free housing, 3 month contract, hate cold weather

Las Vegas, Nevada $37/hr , free housing, 3 month contract . Love the
weather, but unsure of other jobs in area for spouse. Crime, gambling...

Las Cruces, NM - $35/hr , 3 month contract, free housing... don't know
much about the area.

Have been told I could "write my ticket" anywhere in US. But I want
to make the right move.

Where is the best place to live, best culture, warm climate, nice people,
good job for spouse, dog friendly, and good pay for a nurse???

I appreciate any and all replies!!

I would take a good look at the housing and economics of an area before moving there. Especially if you plan to buy a house. For instance in Las Vegas right now they're practically giving houses away, paying peoples first two years mortgage payments just to get rid of them. So that's great for moving into the area, but not so great if you're wanting to leave in a short time. The market will pick up again, of course, but it all depends on your time frame whether it's a benefit or a hinderance.

Honestly, Vegas is the best choice on that particular list.

Of the list you gave us, I would choose Charlotte NC. Definitely not cold but you still have seasons.

Las Cruces is a small city of nearly 100K people. El Paso is the nearest big city and only 45 min away. Though there are not lots of things to do in L.C, unless you like nature and hiking e.t.c., Las Cruces is a great place to live. Housing is reasonable and the weather is perhaps the best in the US, not nearly as hot as Las Vegas.
Vegas might be too much for someone in their 50's. Too busy, big and lots of traffic and places to lose your $. Las Cruces is small, still serene, and beautiful but also fast growing with lots of construction.
You could save more money here rather than in Vegas where you can again run into trouble. Look into the New Mexico section of forum for more info, or start another thread there for more regional responces.

You didn't mention what kind of work your spouse does. That may help you decide where to go.

Thank you for your reply. My husband currently is in Industrial Sales. He has been
in this area "building up the territory" for over 2 years.. With gas prices rising, it
does not make sense for him to basically "churn" here, burning gas driving 300 miles
per week, paying all of his expenses. He has a background in Inside and Outside
Sales in the IT Business.

What about FT Myers? Right now that is our first choice due to familly not being
so far away. One year guaranteed contract $25K bonus!!

Vegas - I will check out rentals in that area. Problem ,,, short term contract,
no gurantee to renew.

Charlotte- 2nd choice!!

FT Myers anybody? Good or bad....Rentals in that area look very reasonable.
Example 2/2 on Golf Course/Pool./Tennis/Garage... $1000 a month!!

If you don't have ties. So to speak. Why not try travel nursing? The travel company sets up the living arrangements, utilities, can furnish places on your request. They arrange and pay for licenses, pay miliage, and some pay alittle for spouse to come. We did it for a couple years and had a great time seeing the U.S. All we took was coffee pot, silverware,tv, cell phone. They furnished the rest. We had choices of apartments, houses, or motels. And yes at the end of the year they did add this onto the pay stub as "something or other". Can't remember. You can then see if you like a place. You can store your stuff in FL. until you find a place to land. If you find a place to live. Just work a deal with Hospital to have time to come back and get your stuff. Also Hospital will/should pay reloacating pay.
In our travels, we got to eat food we'd never have the chance again, meet other cultures, see sights and landmarks, buy antiques, make money. All on the companies dime(s). Ha,ha,ha.

I have been a travel nurse for years now. Ready to settle down.

I took my husband one time with me for a travel assignment, He couldn't
find a job, didn't want to work at McDonalds, and didn't see the point
of finding a "career" for only 13 weeks. (not knowing if I was going to like
it and stay there)

So this time, we have decided to find something permanent. If I dont
like it, I can always travel again (and we would basically go back to
square one which is where we are now)

Just having a hard time finding a place we both agree on!!

Thanks
