Apparently you need to contact your local office to make them aware of the fact that you plan to move. They more than likely will have information on which areas have openings and of course how to transfer.
Cities like Omaha NE, Des Moines IA, Salt Lake City UT and Oklahoma City OK have low unemployment rates and a lower cost of living which would make for good places to check out. Good luck!

Section 8 vouchers generally cover everything but a share of the rent equal to 30% of your income. You could live in a higher or lower-cost state and you'd have exactly the same rent, provided your income remains the same. That being the case, I'd actually consider looking for somewhere that has higher-quality rentals, rather than cheaper ones.

While you can transfer vouchers from one state to another, you need to be enrolled for 12 months generally to do so.

Georgia is the best, you should stay right where you are.

Don't come to Oregon. Virtually no landlords accept Section 8, so you'd end up homeless.

The amount Section 8 pays wouldn't get you a converted garage in my area, excerpt that landlord most likely won't accept your voucher. Craigslist is full of "wanted" ads from people with vouchers trying to find a landlord who will accept them.

Waiting list for the government run housing is years long.

If you've got Section 8 housing where you are located, stay in it.

In CA, some areas are hard to find Section 8 housing - like the SF Bay Area, where there is so much demand.

But, there are areas in CA where it's easy to find Section 8 housing - like Redding and Fresno, for example.
