Accent is an easy one, but not always a dead giveaway.

The northerners from way up north or eastern seaboard usually announce it everywhere they go to everyone they can even if they are wearing a t-shirt that says as such - as if it weren't painfully obvious. "Oh really? Huh."

Highways and interstates are pronounced as just their numbers. So I-65 is just, "Sixty-five". Highways 31 and 280 are "thirty-one" or "two eighty". Saying the whole thing is okay but will raise a red flag. Putting the in front of the number will get you punched in the throat.

Vestavia is pronounced ves-STAY-via, not VESTA-via.
Helena is huh-LEAN-a not HELLA-nuh.
Bessemer is BET-muh or BEH-muh not....okay just kidding about that one.

That might be common elsewhere too, as is not observing stand-right, walk-left on escalators. I've turned right on a red light in NYC...a lot <oops, but I seldom drove>.
That's actually illegal in this state.

Dead giveaway.
My mum's from East Texas and apparently she says it like an "outsider".

She needs to be corrected. How does she pronounce Mexia?

Outsider speak:

- Warshington
- Pikes Market or Pikes Place
- Or-a-gone
- Chainey (for both the Eastern Washington college town and the stadium in Tacoma)
- Ruh-near
- See-kwim
- Sh-lawn (I blame the show Frasier for that one)

Southern California:
Way they dress, people here seemed more concerned about their appearance.
If they don't say 'the' before a freeway number (e.g. The 5, The 101).
Call Orange County 'the OC' (unless they're texting)
Just overall attitude, Californians have kind of have a plastic smile attached to them at all times.

Oregon:
If they dress up moreso than most.
If they say "Ore-gone"
Can't pronounce Willamette, Oswego, Tualatin, Clatskanie, Tigard, etc
Driving too fast
Using an umbrella
Complain that it's "too cold" (mostly Californians) when places like New York are way worse.

I'll ask her next time I see her, but that's a bit far from where she grew up.

When they have something nice to say about a town that you are not currently in, that is not on Cape Cod, or in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire.

When they insist on riding the trolley down the median to get a sno-cone at Hansen's on.....

We have streetcars that run down the neutral ground, and Hansen's is a place to get snowballs on Tchoupitoulas (roughly CHOP- i-too-lus)
