Exactly, and to your very timely point one would most likely consider those living within that enclave the former.

But White Americans of largely British Isles descent from the South are quite culturally different from a mixed Italian-Irish descended American from the Northeast, who is also different from a German/Scandanavian descended American from the Midwest. Various parts of the US have different immigrant sources and histories which contribute to the different culture.

So are White Americans a real ethnic group.
Same way Black Americans are a "real group". I'm talking about descendants of African slaves brought to the US south during the colonial era, I'm not including Black/mulatto Hispanic, Black Caribbean, or African , as these are different cultural groups. Black Americans are descendants of slaves brought from various parts of Africa's Atlantic coast, from Senegal down to Angola. Similarly, black/mulatto populations from Latin America and the Caribbean also have ancestry from the same parts of Africa. Tho different cultures, after acouple generations of a black Jamaican or black Dominican family in the US they largely become apart of the larger Black American community, despite being descendants of slaves brought to another country and not the US.

Basically, what I'm saying is also true with whites, after acouple generations of Italians, Germans, or Scots being in the US, they eventually become apart of the larger White American community. They've assimilated, they are American in culture and nationality (who are white or black in race), and distant ancestry from whatever country (distant enough that they barely acknowledge it and follow American culture more then anything, they are atleast 3-4 generations here probably mixed, and dont care as much for the culture of the ancestral country , culturally american, ethnic nation labels are really only put on immigrants and their 2-3 generations of children n grandchildren, after that they start to assimilate)

No. They're a demographic group, but not an ethnic group. The category "White Americans" is an amalgam of many ethnic groups.

A racial group...as would be Asian Americans for example (with some exceptions) -- there are too many ethnic differences to be considered an ethnic group. In most cases, African Americans with ancestral roots in slavery may have lost track of an ethnic connection in Africa but DNA tests are sometimes helpful in distinguishing some regional ancestry. Ethnic labels that are very broad, like Hispanic, are not very useful. Brazil is largely black and speaks Portuguese, not Spanish. People from Zapateca might not have a lot in common with Cubans or people from Argentina.

Ehh-not really. Black Americans have a common culture/ethnicity because their own culture and history was wiped out during slavery. It is a bond built from oppression, and out of necessity. "White" is not a race-the very concept of "whiteness" was not even created until slavery, and at one point Irish, Italians and Jews were not considered "white".

I am proud of my Irish heritage, as are other whites that know their ethnicity and heritage. For whites that have been in this country so long they don't know their ethnic background, the "ethnicity" is American-not "White-American". I have no cultural connection or common bond with people in this country just because they are "white".

Whiteness, in America, is largely the abandonment of ethnicity in exchange for inclusion in the dominant race. Whiteness is malleable and evolves. It evolved to include Greeks, Italians and Slavs. It may, at some point evolve to include certain Latino groups.
