Newport, Rhode Island was a memorable surprise for me years ago:

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Went there for the first time this summer. Some nice shops and restaurants once you make your way through the crowds:

I just love Newport but it isn't obscure, it's world famous. If I were rich (ok very rich) I would build a mansion on the Cliff Walk with an ocean view and spend the whole summer there, listening to the waves crash against the rocks. and the tinkling of the crystal chandeliers as the wind blows through the open french doors. Can you hear it?

I could also buy this one for 19 million dollars

Astoria, Oregon. Amazing views in all directions. More than half of the houses seem to have a jaw-dropping view.

Richmond, VA. Not really obscure, but definitely underrated.

Grand Junction, Colorado. Never spent much time there myself, but everyone I've ever met who had live there said it was the greatest place in the world.

Bluefield, Virginia/West Virginia, was probably the friendliest place I've ever been to as a stranger.

Honoraboe Mentions: Pittsfield, Massachusetts and Escanaba, Upper Michigan.
