What are some depressed, weird or eerie cities in your opinion? By eerie, I mean creepy, depressed, unpopular, and just has a weird vibe.
I have traveled almost the entire country and have to say that the following places would be my top five:
Utica, NY
Davenport, IA
Norwich, CT
Bristol, VA
Newburgh, NY
It's not a city, just a village and it's not depressed or unpopular because most people don't know about it but I find "Historic Deerfield," Massachusetts eerie, creepy, even spooky, particularly after dark. No one actually lives there except the students at Deerfield Academy. It also has a bloody history.
Akron and Canton Ohio, plus anywhere in West Virginia. They all seem like hick, backward, isolated places where Buffalo Bill (from Silence of the Lambs), or the rapists from Deliverance are likely to live.
Vast sections of Philadelphia (more precisely the mostly white lower middle class/working poor areas) had that feel to me with rundown housing, filthy/garbage strewn streets and residents who seemingly emerge from very shallow gene pools. Very depressing visually and creepy from the perceived birth origins standpoint.
Utica, at one time in the past, had a tense, blue collar vibe to me. Now, it does seem that way to me now, but I could personally understand what the OP is eluding to. It did have a reputation for being a mob town as well.
I'm interested as to the vibe in regards to Rochester NY.
There are definitely some areas in "the crescent" in Rochester that would give anyone and eerie/scary vibe but overall I'd say it wouldn't put it apart from any other blighted area of any other city.
Any small town in Maine, because Stephen King set his novels in them.
