His family moved to OK when he was 12. But it illustrates how this list is problematic. I'd usually associate John Elway with CA more than Aikman, but Jack Elway did not move the fam here from WA until just before he started high school. I'd cite Brady or Rogers instead.

Joe Montana, Stan Musial and Ken Griffey (Jr and Sr,) were all born along a six-mile stretch of road in rural Pennsylvania.

I'm surprised Tennessee isn't an option... Let me add a list of famous celebrities born in TN, were primarily raised in TN or that have permanent residences in TN. *inhales*

Justin Timberlake (Born in Memphis, TN)
Tina Turner (Born in Nutbush, Tennessee)
Oprah Winfrey (Spent much of her childhood being sent between family members in WI and her father in Nashville, TN. She was a permanent resident of Nashville, TN when she was 13-14, lived there from 1968-1976, and started her career as a news anchor in Nashville)
Elvis Presley (Lived in Memphis, TN from age 13+)
Miley Cyrus (Born in Nashville, TN)
Kenny Chesney (Born in Knoxville, TN)
Morgan Freeman (Born in Memphis, TN)
Aretha Franklin (Born in Memphis, TN)
Jack Hanna (Born in Knoxville, TN)
Isaac Hayes (Born in Covington, TN)
Christina Hendricks (Born in Knoxville, TN)
Rodney Atkins (Born in Knoxville, TN)
Johnny Knoxville (Born in Knoxville, TN)
Dolly Parton (Born in Sevierville, TN)
Quentin Tarantino (Born in Knoxville, TN)
Usher (Born in Chattanooga, TN)
Reggie White (Born in Chattanooga, TN)
Chet Atkins (Born in Lutrell, TN)
Tennessee Ernie Ford (Born in Bristol, TN)
Sandra Locke (Born in Shelbyville, TN)
David Keith (Born in Knoxville, TN)
Gregg Allman (Born in Nashville, TN)
Bettie Page (Born in Nashville, TN)
Lucille La Verne (Born in Nashville, TN)
Taylor Swift (Permanent resident of Nashville, TN since age 14+)
Booker T. Jones (Born in Memphis, TN)
The Band Perry (They claim Greenseville, TN as their hometown and their family has been permanent residents for 12 years.)
Pat Head Summitt (Born in Henrietta, TN)
Peyton Manning (Career began playing for the University of Tennessee)
Reese Witherspoon (Permanent resident of Nashville since age 5+)
Hayley Nichole Williams/Lead Singer of Paramore (Resident of Franklin, TN age 13+)
Kings of Leon (Band members were born in, partially raised in and/or currently reside in TN)
... and now I'm tired so I'm going to stop, but the list goes on and on and on...

This site gives a decent list of Celebrity Homes in Tennessee for tourists: Celebrity Homes in Tennessee - CelebrityHousePictures.com
But it's not even close to the number of celebrities in TN.

... Of course, I doubt that TN has as many celebs as New York or California, but I'd say it has a LOT more than most of the places on that list. This isn't even taking into account the political/historical celebrities from this state such as Al Gore Jr., Davy Crockett, Sam Houston, Cordell Hull, Alvin C. York, Admiral David G. Farragut, President Andrew Jackson, Ida B. Wells, (technically Rosa Parks got her start being trained as an activist here), Sequoya, Lamar Alexander, etc.

^^Nice list. I always had Oprah pegged for Buffalo, NY though it is interesting to see she spent much time in TN.

Well, the question was where celebs are from which can be interpreted many different ways. Since the major media hubs are in CA and NY, that's probably where most of them currently are, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's where most of them are "from."

For Oprah... Oprah spent most of her formative years in TN. Her major achievements in Nashville were winning the Nashville's Miss Fire Prevention crown (which lead to a radio station letting her read headlines on air), being crowned Miss Black Tennessee in 1972, representing the state in the Miss Black America competition and then being hired as an anchor for Nashville's WTVF-TV when she was 19. She also went to Tennessee State University, but I don't know if she actually finished her degree or not. So, Tennessee is the place where the celebrity Oprah actually was formulated or "came from."
