Just curious to see what people care for when going out on Fridays and Saturdays.

Personally I would go with either unpretentious dive bars or live music venues. I am not a huge fan of clubs generally speaking.

Nicer dive type bars and big clubs. I generally prefer the nicer bars though. Live music is a plus.

Live music, but my preferred music is gnenerally jazz, which I guess fits into "other" in your poll. Most jazz clubs are small, which is better to me than hearing jazz in some larger concert venue, though if someone I really like plays in a big hall I will go. The problem with jazz clubs, however, is that the food ususally sucks. You defintely attend for the music and the ambience, not the grub.

My other favorite night out is the theater, and blessedly there are loads of choices for that here in NYC.

I like classy dive bars. You know where the drinks are cheap and the servers are friendly, but they still have a good selection of stuff on tap and decent whiskey(Knob Creek preferably). A TV to watch sports is good too, but it doesn't have to be a sports bar. A place with outside seating or a deck is great in summer as well.

I also like jazz clubs or small clubs with good music. Preferably something interesting(bluegrass, underground hiphop, funk, reggae, electronic stuff, Delta blues or something else with a decent groove to it).

I think my favorite city for bars in the US is New Orleans. I just like that even in the touristy areas you can find good real drinking establishments with the right mix, and tons of little bars all over town have good local music. And you can just walk into a bar and end up having a friendly conversation with some random person or who ever is serving you--I don't like places that have snooty service or clientele.

I used to go to Barnes and Noble on almost all Friday and/or Saturday nights, sip from my grande vanilla bean Frappucino, read books on their comfy couches, occasionally listen to 30-second samples of music from their music store, and leave at store close at 11 pm. That was my idea of "nightlife" at 18.

You and I would get along well. The R bar is a popular joint. Ever been? Tipitina's in Uptown on Tchop?

Never been to the R Bar, but I should have since the last couple times I went I stayed near there on Frenchman Street. I think I've been to every music club and bar on Frenchman at least once now. Been to Tipitina's a few times, including a late night show there after Jazz Fest in 2009. Always liked the Maple Leaf too.

My ranks, in order:

1. Unpretentious dive bar w/friends
2. Live music scene
3. Upscale small/midsized lounge
4. Restaurant with bar
5. Nightclub/Top 40

A perfect place would be a dive bar with a large lounge that had live music, good food, and even a place for dancing (all of the above).

I like nice bars mostly, but every now and again I love to go to a dance club with my friends and just get hammered drunk and rave.

I also love outside bars with some live music.
