I was wondering how many Americans know the difference between New York State versus New York City. Also do you know that the capital of the state of NY is Albany?
I know the difference, even though I'm from Texas! But, I'm probably a rarity and I do agree with what I think is the motivation for your question.
While driving through upstate NY a few months ago, it occurred to me to reflect on the stereotypes people in other states have about the state. I was driving through mile after mile of green, forested, rugged terrain, with lots of deer. Plus, the Finger Lakes. It occurred to me that, while parts of Texas do have a beauty of their own, upstate NY has Texas beat overall in terms of natural beauty. I think that people in other states are totally unaware of that ... they would be shocked to see how inaccurate their preconceived notions are.
Wouldn't surprise me if they didn't. My sister went to Ecuador for vacation this past week and got a special international plan for the next two weeks for her cell phone so she could use it down there. While going through the registration with the Customer Service Rep, the Rep asks here "which state is Ecuador in again? Or is it in Canada?"
I think most people know that Upstate NY exists...but they think it is all either bedroom communities to NYC or empty farmland (there are even many people in the NYC region who think this).
I have met adults who have thought that NYC took up the entirety of NYS land area. "isn't that why they say New York, New York so nice they named it twice?"...
I think they do, but Sadly I don't think people care unless your geographically savy or your from Upstate. Most people think New York they think NYC. If they do think of upstate its either as farmland, bedroom communities, or that its the Rust Belt. Even politically people think of NY as a liberal state. if you take out NYC, New York is a swing state.
