Washington, DC

Tons of greenspace with bike/running trails
Low-rise human scale architecture (Parisian-style) with lots of trees/greenery/parks
Two and half hours from the Maryland/Delaware beaches
World-class subway/public transit system
Excellent, diverse restaurant/food scene
World-class museums and cultural opportunity, much of it is FREE.

Los Angeles

Hills, Beach, Mountains, Cheap delicious ethnic food, expanding train system (DTLA to DT Santa Monica in 2015!).

Think of an activity: Surfing, Biking, Skiing, Sand Duning, Skateboarding...you can do in Los Angeles and then some.

Griffith Park, Santa Monica Beach, Topanga Canyon, Baldwin Hills...you can do all of your training there.

I would say Los Angeles also. But, the traffic congestion may limit your ability to experience all of these.

I've always thought Los Angeles would be a great place to live because of all the rec opportunities like skiing, surfing, and biking, BUT the more research I've done the more I hear about how the negatives outweigh the positives. I have a heard a good number of people say that don't have much leisure or down time. The expensive housing and traffic are of a huge concern to me.

I can't believe people are answering this question like there's an obvious answer. To me, it's just about all major cities.
