I've known others in the south who had the same tradition as well.
That's for real. Southerners love roast beef.

Grew up in the midwest, very common for mom to slip a big roast or ham into the oven before church on Sunday. We didn't have a lot of money so that was our big 'meat' meal for the week and leftovers were used to strecth the food budget for the rest of the week with soups, stews, and casseroles.
Every once in a while we'd have fried chicken instead, especially if some of the hens had stopped giving eggs, lol.

I carried on a similar tradition with my family but generally did a roast or chicken in the crockpot, since I always seemed to have to work on the weekends. My kids still ask me to make my potroast when they come for a visit.
