What North American cities (large or small) are known for vibrant, well established, community theater? I'm not talking musicals, dancing cats, or over-produced Broadway crap, but troupes who actually give a voice to local writers and highlights the struggles that occur in individual communities.

I would love to visit a city that understands that theater is a legitimate form of civic discourse and promotes the role of theater and the performing arts in affecting social change.

If anyone knows of any specific theater companies doing this work, that would be great too.

Thanks for your help!

Seattle has a ton of theatre companies. Last I heard it was around 50 in the Seattle area.

There are some probably close to where you live. Have you checked this place out? Auburn Public Theater | Movies, Comedy, Stage, Live Music, Dance in the Finger Lakes Region

Ithaca has quite a few places as well. Nearby cities also have options.

Definitely agree, would add NYC obviously and also Edmonton. Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Minneapolis have the three biggest fringe festivals in North America as far as I know.

Here is one in Ithaca that seems to have what you are looking for: Home

This may work too: Rarely Done Productions

Or this: Paul Robeson Performing Arts Company of Syracuse, NY

Thanks, CK, this is really helpful. In full disclosure though, my motives for posting were neither based on entertainment nor tourism, but rather I am trying to pull together a proposal for a drama workshop at Auburn Prison, and wanted to look at what other cities were doing to merge theater and social justice.

Your suggestion of the Civic Ensemble in Ithaca was particularly helpful!

Otherwise, I love it here in Central New York, and am working hard to make it even better! Thanks again for your help.

No, I believe you and understood what you were asking. I just wasn't sure if you were aware of potential options. I would also look into Paul Robeson and perhaps the Community Folk Art in Syracuse as well.
