So I'm wondering how many cities fall victim to countless misperceptions and/or short-sighted views from outsiders. My question is "What do people think your city is?" Then please tell us what it actually is.
What People Think New Orleans Is: a destroyed hurricane magnet & third world warzone that's only relevant during Mardi Gras.
What it Actually is: a Vibrant city full of energy that perennially celebrates life and happiness and encourages all to do the same.

People tend to view Louisville in two extremes: It's either a rising hip city with vibrant urban corridors and great parks or a dirty rust belt city that's in deline. Both are true depending on the side of town. West/ South Ends (basically west of I-65 sans U of Louisville campus) is an area with lots of abandoned factories and struggling neighborhoods. The East End is liberal, vibrant, educated (in many areas 50% of people have a bachelor's degree) and has tons of new development. Churchill Downs horse track is not located in a good area and it's the main thing most tourist see... not a good thing lol.
I'd be surprised if many people (C-D posters excluded) knew Helena was the capital of Montana. We're a city just like most others. Just because we're in Montana doesn't mean we're all cowboys. It doesn't snow as much as people would like to think. Not nearly as much.
Oh, and it's pronounced Hell-in-uh, not HelEEN-uh.

I took my mother to Wine Country when she visited. She's from Texas and asked why I kept saying we were going to "St. HeLEEN-uh" instead of "St. HELL-in-uh". However, she also asked if Mount St. Helena was "still active..."
I live in Charleston WV and there are people who say this area is filled with "hicks". I definitely disagree with this assessment, now there are blue collar folks all around but they are good friendly people.
The image of Baltimore being very ghetto IS true, though only for the city itself and not the suburbs.
