In your view will the US be and economic powerhouse in the 21st century?

Isn't this kind of a silly question? We're currently well into the 21st century, and the U.S. is, by far, the richest major nation on earth, and has, by far, the largest economic output.

Of course we'll remain an economic powerhouse. But will the US remain as the largest GDP? Most likely not, China's overall GDP should surpass our's in 20-30 years. India probably 20 some years after that.

I think the United States will continue to an economic power and certainly remain one of the Great Powers. But China will pass the US and take the leadership position. I think India will also but that's going to take some time.

Unless we regain an energy advantage over competing nations like China, India, and Russia then no. We can do this very simply, but right now we are failing to utilize our fossil fuels enough to deviate our dependence on foreign sources and develop renewable energy at the same time. If we can take advantage of natural gas powered cars, and oil fields in Canada and Alaska that we can't drill for now. Then we should be fine. The world runs off of energy, and to be a global leader you have to have something to use as leverage for trade and commerce.

It is interesting how people will often mention China as country that will supposedly overtake the U.S. economically - even though China requires 1 billion people to do so.

Yet hardly anybody mentions the fact that the European Union already has a larger economy than that of the U.S. - and it does it with much less than 1 billion people.

How stable do you think the EU is?

All of this "who will overtake the US" crap is nothing more than wishful thinking and it's stupid. The US is by far the most stable and powerful economic entity on the planet, has been for more than 150 years and is showing no sign of slipping. Just to list one example of this: in the past two hundred thirty years France has ratified 17 different constitutions, the US had ratified exactly one.
