There's plenty of information on the Internet about what state has the fattest residents (sorry, Mississippi and Louisiana), but what state has the tallest? My sense is that the further west you go the taller the people get.

I'm from Nevada where I was pretty average height, but I tower over everyone here in Maryland.

The Upper Midwest in general has some pretty tall people, no doubt in part due to the heavy Germanic influence (Germans, Swedes, Norwegians) there. Northern Europeans are some of the tallest people on Earth.

The tallest countries are Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Denmark, so I would say a state in the Upper Midwest where most people are of Scandinavian and Dutch ancestry (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Michigan and the Dakotas)

I found that the people in New York City to be quite short. But I don't know if race and ethnicity is the cause. It seems like the Irish guys in Boston and NYC are shorter than the Irish guys in Chicago.

Was this just a guess? I would expect that North Dakota is taller than Minnesota (more Scandinavian), and that Hawaii is shorter than New Mexico (majority Asian versus plurality Hispanic).

Aparently not Ohio. My dad is the tallest in the family coming in at an astounding 5'5". I'm the shortest at 5'1". Even though my daughters were born in Montana they have 100% Ohio blood. My youngest doesn't have a prayer of hitting 5'.

I think the tallest would have to be
1. Minnesota
2. North Dakota
3. South Dakota,
4. Iowa
5. Nebraska (hasn't been mentioned. Not only am I 5 ft 7 and am short even compared to quite a few girls here, but there are a lot of Germans, and a few scandinavians, granted I'm czech, and most eastern europeans while not super short, aren't super tall either.)

As for the shortest the top 5 would probably be
1. New Mexico due to hispanic influence
2. Texas, again with hispanic influence, granted a lot of white guys i've known from there weren't that tall.
3. California
4. Hawaii
5. New York

Texas is all over the board height wise, because though there are many Hispanics and they tend to be shorter, there are also a lot of ethnic Germans in Texas and they tend to be quite tall.
