I guess, but the area fits some of what you are looking for. Much of the nightlife is in Royal Oak and Ferndale as well.

I think Columbus and Indianapolis are more of what you are looking for.

Why? Both have pretty good job markets and are both within the top 20 in the country in population.

It may be a matter of getting all of your criteria together, then coming back to ask the question again.

What are you looking for exactly as far as cost of living? Illinois isn't really a cheap state to live in and neither is Maryland, Do you want to own a home one day? If so, check out property taxes in Maryland and especially Illinois. I'm from Maryland and while a great state, it is EXPENSIVE and very crowded unless you look east or west. The perk is you will never be bored and there are jobs out the ying yang. My Aunt recently rented out her house and moved into a 1 bedroom apartment in Falls church, Va (close to Md), $1600 a month.

I live 5 miles from Illinois and while I like it, their property taxes (and a lot of their other taxes) are nuts. Property tax is sometimes double what you'll pay on the Missouri side. The state is flat broke, take that into consideration.

I'd look real hard at St. Louis or the Twin cities if it were me.

Detroit - cheap to live in and low traffic... don't expect anything else though.

Just remember, generally speaking, you get what you pay for....

You could always move to Dallas. We have four seasons - Almost Summer, Summer, Still Summer and Christmas.

We did have a white Christmas last year though! Actually it does get cold here in the wintertime but it rarely snows or ices. Summer is what air conditioning is made for...and lakes...and rivers...which we have plenty of.

Spring and fall are awesome in east Texas.

I know that the OP is probably looking for a more temperate climate, but I just wanted to throw DFW into the mix because it's a low cost of living area, a good economy, and the real heat of summer is only three months consistently. From late June to early September can be brutally hot, but the rest of the year is bueno!

And lots lots lots to do in the DFW area.
