Hello -

I've been looking around at different cities/towns, particularly those out west in the mountains, but all of them seem so suburban in nature. For a while I thought that I wanted to be in Salt Lake City, but much of the city looks like a strip mall, with only small pockets having any density at all. What are some cities/towns in beautiful settings (I would prefer the mountains, but I will leave "beautiful" for you to define at your own discretion) that have an urban core or more walkable and vibrant sections of town? I currently live in Mississippi, and I'm craving the opportunity to have a plethora of outdoor activity close by.

For mountains and small cities with beautiful settings, I'd include Burlington, VT with a vibrant walkable downtown core and eclectic college town atmosphere, beautiful lakefront on Lake Champlain (it's big) and nice sunsets, wedged between the Adirondack and Green Mountains. Santa Fe is pretty has a nice historic downtown core as well with the nearby high desert and Sangre de Cristo mountains.

Big Cities, I'd say Seattle, Portland, or Denver as they all have fun and vibrant downtown cores that are rapidly gorwing, with Seattle being the most beautiful. And of course San Francisco would be on this as well.

Biasedly I'd include Minneapolis, but it's not mountains, it's lakes (beautiful lakes and parks).

If you don't mind a small city, Ithaca NY is nice. No "mountains", but many hills and valleys. Plenty gorges and lakes as well.

Glens Falls NY is another small city that would fit. Glens Falls is full of things to do, delicious restaurants, and numerous places to shop for everyone in your family or friends.

Asheville might be calling your name.

I like Salt Lake a lot. But due to it's super-long blocks, wide streets, etc., it's downtown isn't very "urban" feeling.

I agree that Portland or Seattle would more fit the bill.

Does it have to be out west? Pittsburgh would fit the bill. Philadelphia has a great walkable core with plenty of outdoor activities nearby in both the city limits and the suburbs. That may be a good option for you as well.

If it must be out west the three options you have are Portland, Seattle and San Francisco.

Walkable for sure, but definitely lacking in the "naturally beautiful" category...
