I'm dreading how long winter will be, so I'm thinking about trying to go somewhere a bit warmer to thaw a bit sometime in January, February or March. I was thinking Mardi Gras in New Orleans is a possibility, but I associate that with a slew of drunken bros which doesn't sound very appealing.
I'm looking for what might be a particularly good time (maybe coinciding with interesting events and decent weather) to visit some place that's three hours or less by plane or nine hours or less by train or up to fifteen hours by if it's an overnight run with sleeper car) from NYC that's got some interesting sights.
What do you like to do? New Orleans in the winter/early spring is the best time to visit. There are always events going on, especially festivals and concerts. Skip Mardi Gras, it's fun for visitors but way too crowded downtown and expensive. Hard to get a good room by now.
Miami is always a great visit, if that's your cup of tea. Maybe you can try Charleston and Savannah since they are so close to each other.
I was actually thinking of heading to New Orleans too this winter, but I think I'm gonna really snowbird it and head to Puerto Rico in January. The flights are a little more than 3 hours but pretty reasonably priced at around $400 roundtrip.

Are there any events in winter/early spring that you recommend for New Orleans aside from Mardi Gras? I'm not against crowds--it's more that my impression of Mardi Gras is a lot of drunken bros. Not that I have anything against drinking--it's just that kind of drunkenness is sort of dull to me.

Oh yea, I'm considering that and the Caribbean in general, too.
Austin sounds great, but it's edging on just too long of a flight as I'd like to keep flight time short for such a brief visit. Are there any particular times over the winter/early spring you'd recommend for either San Antonio or Austin?
