This seems to be pretty much a drew, or leaning slightly in favor of Omaha. Yes, Des Moines seems to be better in terms of murder, but it's significantly worse in terms of property crime, especially burglaries. Here are some stats, based on prevalence per 100,000 people in a year:

Burglary: Des Moines, 1219 ; Omaha, 805

Theft: Des Monies, 3618 ; Omaha, 3101

Rape: Des Moines, 50 ; Omaha, 53

Murder: Des Moines, 4 ; Omaha, 10

Arson: Des Moines, 21 ; Omaha, 22

I was thinking the topic of safety more in the terms of violent crimes.

As of FBI stats:

Des Moines city homicide rate, 3.9 per 100,000, metro area homicide rate 1.6 per 100,000. Omaha city homicide rate 10.4 per 100,000 and metro rate of 5.8 per 100,000.

Des Moines area has rates of 30.9 for rape, 44.4 for robbery and 200.8 for assault. Omaha has 41.9 for rape, 90.4 for robbery and 245.6 for assault. Within the city themselves Omaha murder rate is over twice as high, rape is around 7% higher and robbery is 60% higher.
