I plan to travel to the States from Vancouver (Canada) with friends in mid-February.
There are 4 options of destinations in mind, but i can't make up my mind as to which city is the best. Due to financial budget constraints, we can only travel to one city.
The biggest factor for us is the cost of living of each city, relative to Vancouver.
So which city would be the most affordable of all?
I'd say it's a draw between Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Both could be done cheaply if you know what you're doing. I think it would be harder to get by on a shoe-string in Hawaii and San Francisco.
When I was around 21 I took a wonderfully cheap trip to Los Angeles. I stayed at a sketchy motel, got around on public transportation, lived off of burritos and cheat Thai food, and spent all day on the beach. Including airfare, the whole trip probably ran me around $500.
Vegas has great deals on rooms if you know where to look. I don't gamble though. I've been to Vegas once, and that was one time too many.
If you get a cheap hotel off the strip and eat cheaply (fast food, cheap buffets, etc) Vegas can definitely be done cheaply but at the same time that's no way to enjoy a vacation. You 're not supposed to "penny pinch" and nickel&dime on your vacation if you go to Vegas stay at a nice hotel on the strip, eat whatever you want and enjoy yourself. However, if money is no issue I would much rather go to Hawaii. San Francisco would be fun as well and LA would be my last choice unless you're really into clubbing and wanna shop til you drop but I think you would have more fun in the other destinations.
Hawaii. You get more bang for your buck. The beaches, the weather, the tropical and relaxed vibe, the scenery, and the culture. LA is another great option for similar reasons, but even more cultural amenities. I like SF too but I feel like it would not be as good of a vacation to experience in winter because of the cold. Same for Vegas, which, IMO, is too touristy and tacky for anything more than a quick weekend.

Go to Hawaii. It's worth the extra $$$
