5 of the 6 large and walkable big cities I'd consider living in in the U.S. are in cold climates, the other is SF, it's too far away, too isolated, too pricey, and too small compared to other options and being close to friends and family, and I've already lived there twice.
Minerva -read the entire thread. Don't attribute any motives to me other than curiosity. Why did I ask this during the winter? I just got the thought watching the news and seeing the snow -travel -accident reports. Aa I suggested the media bias of reporting the negative aspects of winter may have influenced me.So no bias here - ienjoye NYC and I enjoy Rockport Texas - but for me as I'm older I prefer Rockport.
I've lived in NYC and Indiana and both certainly had good things about them ( Indiana has Indiana U Basketball). I still love visiting NYC great city.
Fort he last 16 years I've lived in Rockport, Texas in Aransas County Texas ( pop. 26,000). It's a peninsula on the Gulf Coast-more beach and water front than people. It's quite a friendly place, many retirees, and it only freezes an average of a couple of hours every other year or so (usually around 4:30 AM). There is a bit of snow every 3 years or so. There is no State Income Tax, NO traffic-- well I consider it traffic when a car comes by and yells out the window "Twiz Please move over ( dog likes to nap on the pavement). Violent crime is rare but usually intrafamily. There are no unsafe streets. Rockport is environmentally liberal but otherwise conservative.
I don't like crime, really cold weather, high taxes and traffic - all items people like to ***** about- so why do you stay?
Personally I wonder how/why people are able to put up with the oppressive, sweltering heat of Texas..........but to each his own. When it's cold, I put on a coat. When it's hot, what do you do? Walk around naked?
It is no fun being in 95 degree weather although shorts and tshirts -especially in Rockport (known for being casual) are fine. Going to court to file papers in shorts does not even raise an eyebrow.
There is not that much difference between high 80s and mid 90's and one becomes accustomed to it. Remember many places like El Paso --NM Colo have desert climates where dry and 100 is still good for playing tennis and the evenings become cool.
MY guess is Los Angeles has one of the best climates but cost, pollution and traffic made it undesirable for many. THe Canary Islands also boasts a great climate.

The difference between northern and southern summers is the humidity. Sure, it's humid up here in NJ but not nearly as humid as the south - Florida, for example. While differences in actual temperature may not be that different, humidity is thicker in the south and it's very noticeable. I won't go to central Florida (Orlando for example) in the summer. I went to Clearwater in July two years ago and that was fine right at the beach, but frequently went to St. Petersburg and Tampa and it was much more overwhelming in those places a bit more inland than the immediate beach hotel I was staying at. The same goes for beach areas vs inland here but overall our humidity north is not as bad as in the south.
LA has a great climate if you like monotony. It's mostly the same year round, which is fine but not for me. I guess growing up there, you'd prefer it and growing up elsewhere you may not.
