Not really mispronounced, but no one who lives in San Francisco refers to it as "Frisco". They call it by its full name or more commonly "the city". Often people from the midwest call it "frisco".

Some Wisconsin cities, towns, counties, etc. have have such strange names that there is a website with audio examples of each city, village and town name. Some examples: Ashwaubenon (ash-WAW-beh-non), Waupun (wuh-PON, not WAW-pen), Weyauwega (WHY-uh-WEE-guh), etc. It also has names of government officials, Indian tribes/casinos (Lac Courte Oreilles = "La-COO-duh-RAY"), state and national parks (Chequamegon = "Sheh-WAW-meh-gen"), etc.

I have a problem with Annapolis (I studder when I say that, I never studder otherwise) right now. I hope to find a solution to it sometime soon.

But, how do you pronounce Oregon?
I always thought it was pronounced Or-E-gon, and everyone here pronounces it that way, but then I visited Alaska, and everyone said "Or-gon". So, I don't know anymore...

When you say Ore-gon, does that mean that one pronounces the e?

(Yes, this has been a truly confusing "word" for me for quite some time now...)

The natives pronounce it something like the word "organ." I'm not sure why.

Also, if you're visiting California it's Se-PUL-ve-da, not Sepul-VE-da.

Never quite lived that one down

When I was 14, I went on a 6 week camping trip out west with my best friend and his family. Told 'em I always wanted to go to Yoze-might National Park. The laughter follows me to this day.

Its been mentioned, but Ill nominate Illinois again. Its probably one of the most mispronounced states out there. Im shocked and amazed when I go out of state and people say, "oh, youre from Ill-i-noise?" UGH. The S is silent!!!! Its "Ill-i-noy".

Here's three more:

Eugene, OR - emphasis on the second syllable. Pronounced yew-JEEN, not YEW-jeen.

Madrid, NM - emphasis on first syllable. Pronounced MAD-rid, not muh-DRID.

Albuquerque, NM - there is only one "r" and no "a". Pronounced al-bew-kerr-key, not al-burr-kerr-key or al-bah-kerr-key. (The city did away with the 2nd "r" a long time ago, no one really knows why.)

Chap
