Basically though, those are just preferences. I'd be willing to live almost anywhere because this move will only be for 3 or so years and then my husband and I will be moving to Canada. The biggest thing I want to accomplish in the next few years is to save up a good amount of money. We'll be sticking to apartments for the next few years and just plan to live like college students for awhile longer so that we can put away enough money to buy some land and start on building a house.
Sounds like your best plan would be to simply gut out living in Akron for the three more years or so that you need to bank money before moving to Canada. Akron is definitely cheaper than the PNW, and if you stay you could avoid the cost of relocating.
This may be right up your husband's and your alley. Baltimore is certainly quirky enough for an author and a librarian. Quite a few writers have been from here. And.... you'll never have to worry about biting your tongue!!
From what I hear, librarian jobs are not a dime a dozen. I have some friends in the field. I would suggest finding the job first. I would agree that Akron may not be a bad place for inexpensive living. You could also try W. PA. Pittsburgh is a fairly liberal city, anyway, plenty of liberals there.
I think you all should try Charlottesville, Virginia. Its a writers town.
