I'd probably put Toronto in Minnesota, Wisconsin, or Western Michigan.

Winnipeg would definitely go in Minnesota.

Halifax in Maine, as you said.

Saint John's in Alaska.

I could see is Ottawa in New Hampshire. It's clean, safe, pretty, but boring. But the fact that it's a national capital throws a curve-ball.

London, ON is kind of like a hip, dense version of Indianapolis.

Montreal and Quebec City are too different from anything in the USA.

I've never been to Calgary, Edmonton, Victoria, Regina, or Saskatoon.

Calgary would fit best in Colorado. Edmonton too probably.

New York City in NJ. It's more similar with half of NJ than it is with all but a fraction of NYS.

As for New York City and Los Angeles.....Things might get a little tricky....
More like Miami in Cuba and St. Louis in Illinois.

Miami is more Caribbean in orientation and Cincinnati would be a better Kentucky fit than St. Louis. St. Louis is in a severe culture war with Missouri, so Kentucky would be an even worst blend. Virginia has to much of an Eastern orientation for St. Louis to fit.

What? Cincy fits more with Kentucky or maybe Tennessee or WV but even that is stretching it. As for Baltimore it could also fit in North Carolina or Virginia since it is the upper south in some sense. Also how do Minneapolis and Georgia fit in the same sentence. Maybe South Dakota or Iowa, but Georgia.

Here are a few more

Seattle in Oregon
Portland in Washington or Northern California.
The Inland empire of LA in Arizona
Salt Lake City in Nevada or Idaho
Denver in New Mexico, Wyoming, or West Texas
Dallas in Oklahoma
Houston in Louisiana
Oklahoma City in Kansas or Texas
Wichita in Texas or Oklahoma
Tulsa in Arkansas or southern Missouri
Des Moines in any state that borders Iowa (NE, SD, MO, MN, WE, IL
Omaha in Iowa
Duluth Minnesota in Ontario
Nashville in Alabama
Memphis in Mississippi or Arkansas

Yakima and the Tri-Cities in Washington could easily be in central California(the Bakersfield area).

always thought Chicago has more in common with Wisconsin than Illinois. sounds better too Chicago, Wisconsin. Originally, Chicago was indeed part of the Wisconsin territory until Illinois demanded a slice of Lake Michigan. If the original border had stood, Wisconsin would have almost 15,000,000 people.

This maybe explains why the Bears-Packers rivalry already feels like a civil war of sorts.
