Redneck or Good Old Boy?
OK, here goes a new subject, and mind you I do not wish to offend. Our friends up north ask "what is a redneck?" or "what is the difference between a redneck and a good old boy?". Truth is we have lived in NC for 11 years and still are not sure so we just tell them what we think they want to hear...but we would like to know the REAL origin of both terms...that is if anyone out there REALLY knows!

A good ol' boy is a man who takes pride in where he's from and enjoys the finer things in life (like a nice American-made pick up truck, a weekend of fishing with the boys, etc).
I think the key difference is that good ol' boys aren't ignorant to society. Only when they're ignorant to society do they become rednecks.
Also, redneck seems to have a pejorative connotation.

Good ol' boy: Jeff Foxworthy
Redneck: Larry the Cable Guy

I have always considered good ol' boys to have a bit more "class" than a redneck and white trash has no class at all.

A good 'ole boy as I understand it is usually a man that is part of a circle of wealthy or influential men that engage in a level of cronyism that sometimes unethical or even illegal.
A redneck as I understand is more brutish, middle to lower class, is sometimes seen as uncouth, uneducated, closed-minded and prejudiced-many times proud of these attributes.

That sounds dead-on to me. You hit it out of the park.

I was under the impression they basically mean the same thing. Jess Foxworthy appear more sophisticated than Daniel Whitney aka Larry the Cable Guy.

The term Good ol' boy network is similar to the old boy's network of the UK.
