Because it fits most of your criteria. It's about the same size as NOLA but located farther inland and is pretty underrated in terms of character, vibrancy, arts, etc.
In my opinion, I think NOLA is more walkable, dense, and urban than Louisville, but I think Louisville is craftier, hipper, artsier than NOLA. Louisville's a very underrated city. It's worth spending a weekend there and checking out. Stay in an old Victorian B&B, do some bourbon tastings, eat chocolate walnut pie, listen to some live music, take a riverboat ride, check out a craft fair, put five bucks on a horse race.

After researching just a little this morning, Louisville is actually a really good suggestion. Its a gorgeous mid-sized city with the historic, artsy charm we like. It also looks to have rural surroundings, which could be cool I guess.
Thanks for the suggestion. Its one of the best so far.

And an added plus is that it's relatively close to other regional cities like Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Chicago, etc. if you ever want a change of scenery.
LOL. I wasn't ignoring you intentionally. Somehow I missed your post entirely.
I've thought several times about Austin because of its quirky nature and being the "live-music capitol"...don't know how true that is though.
From what I've seen of Denver, it looks kind of....rustic? Or am I completely wrong?
Oops. My bad.
Denver is an outdoorsy city, yes, but still has what can be found in most major cities.
