Well, it would make sense that someone looking for intellectual activities would find them in a town with other intellectuals - which usually means a college town - although large cities would also qualify (Chicago, NY, San Francisco). However the original post wasn't looking for huge cities but for small cities and towns.

Ashland, Oregon actually has a vibrant intellectual community that exists apart from the University due to it's extensive Shakespeare Festival. I can think of a few places in the east with similar seasonal festivals that would be alive with intelligent folks and activities but generally you need a university to find like-minded folks.
